Gershwin, by Ira -March 25, 2007
World Premiere
a
brief description
"True music must repeat
the thought and inspirations of the people and the time. My people are
Americans and my time is today."
- George Gershwin
Harry Clark is creating a new portrait for the
2006-2007 season,
that of George Gershwin, from the perspective of his beloved brother
and collaborator, Ira.
George Gershwin (1898-1937) is the most famous American composer. With
brother Ira at his side, the two revolutionized popular music and
created masterpieces that defy the easy popular/classical
paradigm. This portrait tells of the brothers' extraordinary rise
and success in the first decades of the 20th century and provides an
intimate glimpse into their personal and professional relationship.
This world premiere performance will be in a chamber music format.
An orchestral version of this portrait will receive its world premiere
on
March 10 and 17, 2007. The performance will be by Orchestra
New England and Maestro James Sinclair, who commissioned the work.

About the music
Music exclusively by George Gershwin include
selections for solo piano and piano and voice.

Performers
Making his debut with
Chamber Music PLUS is pianist Jeff
Haskell.
When Jeff Haskell sits down at the piano,
something inventive and inspired happens. The word eclectic doesn't
even begin to describe his amazing musical dexterity. A favorite with
Tucson jazz audiences, we are thrilled to have him join our family of
stars.
Harold Dixon
is Ira Gershwin. No stranger to theater and classical
music, Harold's most recent performance in Tucson was ATC's
presentation of Ella. He has recorded and narrated Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit. Dr.
Dixon is University Distinguished Professor in the School of Theatre
Arts at the University of Arizona, where he is also the founding
artistic director of Arizona Repertory Theatre
Susan Claassen
directs the production.
