- Schuldmann DUO
and All That JAZZ
- Sunday , March 22, 2009 @ 3p.m. in
Tucson - Friday ,
April 3, 2009 @ 8p.m. in Scottsdale
a
brief description
"The
basic difference between classical music and jazz is that in the former
the music is always greater than its performance - whereas the way jazz
is performed is always more important than what is being played."-André
Previn
By popular audience request the founders of Chamber Music
PLUS Southwest
end the season with a finale of works for cello and piano from the
lighter side
of the repertoire.
Though Harry and Sanda most often are associated with the
romantic repertoire and have a great affinity for music composed by
women, they have great addiction for the repertoire that often has been
ignored in the concert hall, in recent history. The lighter side of
classical, the transcriptions and the fabulous desert like offerings.
You will be entertained and mesmerized by the music, we promise.

About the music
The program will feature music by Gershwin,
Piazzolla and the Claude Bolling's Suite for Solo Cello and Jazz Piano
Trio.
Some of the most beautiful melodies Gershwin wrote, and there are
countless great tunes, without a doubt can be found in his songs. Harry
and Sanda will feature some of the magnificent tunes including Bess you
is My Woman and Summer Time Couple of Tangos by Piazzolla and the
center piece of the program is the Suite by Claude
Bolling.
After first winning world-acclaim as a jazz performer, pianist-arranger
and conductor Claude Bolling wrote music for films and backed Brigitte
Bardot, Sacha Distel, Juliette Greco and other vocalists in commercial
recording sessions. Later still, however, he was to win even greater
renown for some ingenious semi-classical jazz essays in cross-over. He
wrote three other suites one for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio, Guitar and
a Two Piano Jazz Suites.
Astor Piazzolla
was born in Argentina in 1921 and became one of the major classical
composers of that country. He became so besotted by the music of the
South American dance, The Tango, that he destroyed his early works and
devoted his life to writing music with that rhythm as its basis. He has
developed this art to the point where it is difficult to detect the
dance in his complex and strictly classical music. Outside of the South
American continent his music was little known until the past decade,
when a renewed interest in the dance, mainly through major exposure in
the cinema, has taken his works back into the concert hall. Though
there are examples of the dance used in its most basic and popular
form, Piazzolla has composed most of his music for small chamber groups
or solo instruments. Most is written in a very contemporary 20th
century style, usually calling for virtuosity of performance.

Performers
"Clark and Schuldmann
have a way of digging into their material with a wholehearted
enthusiasm that is disarming. They are fine musicians with plenty of
technical equipment
and they work together with as much rapport as could be asked."
The New York Times
Harry and Sanda came from two distant deserts
and met in Austin, TX while studying with their respective
mentors: pianist Leonard Shure and cellist George Neikrug.
Music brought them together, and it remains their way of life. They
started playing together at UT and never stopped. They started Chamber
Music PLUS in Hartford, CT and have propelled the organization to a
national, well respected and admired artists led organization.
They have a strong commitment to championing new works, creating
original new concepts with a special affection for
educating at risk youth and championing womens' art.
